What is this? Gamepad Tester Pro is a free browser-based diagnostic tool that reads your controller through the HTML5 Gamepad API and shows every input live — buttons, analog sticks, triggers, D-pad and vibration motors. Connect your gamepad, press any button, and the dashboard lights up in under a second. Nothing is installed, no account is needed, and your input data never leaves your device.

What this tester checks

Seventeen inputs, four axes and two rumble motors — every signal your browser can read, visualized live.

All 17 buttons

Face buttons, bumpers, D-pad, Start/Select and stick clicks report live state plus analog value (0.00–1.00). A button that flickers or never reaches 1.00 is failing.

Analog sticks & drift

Both sticks report precise X/Y position. Left untouched, healthy sticks rest at ±0.05 — anything beyond is drift. Run the drift test →

Analog triggers

LT/RT show full travel from 0.00 to 1.00. Pull slowly — jumps or dead spots in the curve mean a worn trigger.

Vibration motors

The rumble test fires both weak and strong motors (Chrome/Edge). One silent side means a dead motor. Test vibration →

Deadzone measurement

The adjustable deadzone slider shows exactly how much stick movement games ignore. Measure deadzone →

Up to 4 controllers

Connect several gamepads and flip between tabs. Ideal for comparing a new controller against your old one.

Test your gamepad in 4 steps

Connect. Plug in via USB or pair over Bluetooth. Use Chrome or Edge for full support including vibration.

Press any button. Browsers only expose gamepads after first input — a privacy feature, not a bug.

Work every input. Buttons, both sticks in full circles, D-pad, bumpers, full trigger pulls. Watch each tile hit 1.00.

Read the results. Sticks resting far from 0.00 mean drift. Tiles that never light up mean dead inputs.

What this tester cannot do

An honest tool states its limits:

  • It can't fix drift — it diagnoses with precision; repair is a separate job. See how to fix stick drift.
  • It can't read true USB polling rate — browsers see input events, not the USB report rate. Our polling rate guide explains what's actually measurable.
  • It can't test gyro or motion controls — the Gamepad API doesn't expose accelerometers.
  • It can't override OS-level filtering — some drivers pre-filter stick data before the browser sees it.
  • Pro paddles (e.g. Xbox Elite) mirror existing buttons at OS level, so they won't appear as separate inputs.

Works with your controller

Any HID-compliant gamepad your operating system recognizes — over USB, Bluetooth or wireless dongle.

Xbox

Series X|S, One, Elite (XInput standard mapping).

PlayStation

DualSense (PS5) and DualShock 4 (PS4).

Test DualSense →

Nintendo

Switch Pro Controller (digital shoulder buttons).

Test Switch Pro →

PC & others

8BitDo, Logitech, generic DirectInput pads, arcade sticks.

Chrome and Edge offer the complete experience including vibration. Firefox covers buttons and sticks; Safari support is partial. For the most accurate readings, test wired over USB.

When should you test?

Before you buy used

Run the 10-point buying checklist on the seller's controller before money changes hands.

When something feels off

Missed shots blamed on "lag" are often a dying trigger or drifting stick. Two minutes here settles it.

After a repair

Replaced a stick module or cleaned contacts? Verify every input before closing the shell.

Before competition

Tournament players test the night before. A failing input found mid-match costs more than the controller.

Tested by the Gamepad Tester Pro Lab

Every guide is written from direct testing of our web tool with software-simulated gamepads on Chrome and Edge — following our documented testing methodology. Physical controller testing is in progress.

How we test

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this gamepad tester really free?
Yes — completely free, with no account, no signup and no download. Test as many controllers as you like, as often as you like.
Do I need to install any drivers or software?
No. The tool uses the HTML5 Gamepad API built into modern browsers. If your operating system recognises the controller, this page can test it.
Is my controller data sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser via JavaScript. No input data leaves your device, and nothing is stored or tracked.
Which browsers are supported?
Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge offer full support including vibration testing. Firefox supports button and stick testing; Safari has partial support. For the best experience, use an up-to-date Chrome or Edge on desktop or Android.
Why is my controller not detected?
Press any button on the controller first — browsers hide gamepads until first input. Also try Chrome/Edge, a different USB port or cable, and make sure no game (like Steam) is holding the controller exclusively.
How do I check for stick drift?
Leave both sticks untouched and look at the Axes panel. Healthy sticks rest between −0.05 and 0.05. If an axis sits far from zero without you touching it, that stick is drifting. For a full diagnosis, use our dedicated stick drift test.
Does it work with PS5 DualSense and Xbox Series controllers?
Yes. Both work over USB and Bluetooth in Chrome and Edge, including their analog triggers. Vibration support depends on the browser and connection type.
Can I test the vibration / rumble motors?
Yes — press the "Test Vibration" button. If your browser and controller support the vibration actuator API, both rumble motors will fire for about one second.
How accurate is this tester?
It reads the same Gamepad API values games use — button values and axis positions are exactly what your browser reports. Its limits are listed in "What this tester cannot do" above.
Why do my triggers jump in steps on Bluetooth?
Some Bluetooth stacks report triggers in coarse steps instead of a smooth curve. Test wired over USB for the finest analog readings.
Can I test on my phone?
Yes — Chrome on Android supports the Gamepad API over USB-OTG and Bluetooth. iPhone/Safari support is limited.
Does it work with the Steam Deck?
In desktop mode with Chrome or Edge, yes. In Gaming Mode, Steam holds the controller exclusively, so use a desktop browser instead.
